Abstract

A very simple probe (L) derived from o-phenylenediamine and salicyaldehyde have been explored for efficient detection of Ce4+ ion. The interaction of L with Ce4+ has been established by single crystal X-ray structure of the resulting complex. The Ce4+ assisted inhibition of photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process of L leads to chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF), associated with 97-fold fluorescence enhancement. L exhibits excellent sensitivity and detects as low as 1 × 10−13M Ce4+ in aqueous-ethanol (1/4, v/v). The probe is useful for intra-cellular imaging of Ce4+ ion in mouse monocyte.
