Abstract

In a recent experiment by Postman, Adams, and Phillips, the recall of intentional learners exceeded that of incidental learners for materials of low but not for high associative value.' The recall of both groups increased with associative value. When learning was tested by the method of recognition, however, no such relationships appeared. The experiment to be reported was designed to provide further data on recognition as a function of meaningfulness of material and intention to learn.
