Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present a frequency domain technique for the recognition and location of internal winding faults in power transformers. Both turn to turn and turn to ground faults will be considered. Using a simple distributed parameter network, cascaded with other sections to simulate a generalized model, the frequency domain input impedance is used as the main criterion to conduct this investigation. The performance of both the magnitude and the phase angle of the input impedance are analyzed. The location of the fault, as well as the number of series shorted turns, will be investigated.
