Abstract

This concluding chapter summarizes social identity theory-based findings and suggests some general policy implications. Throughout history, China and Russia have sought acknowledgment of their great power status through a variety of means, including diplomatic cooperation. Both countries have defied the United States and the Western countries on major foreign policy issues because they are asserting their prerogatives to act independently, as great powers do. China and Russia believe that their inferior status in world politics after the end of the Cold War was an aberration, and both are prepared to claim their rightful place and to demand respect for their geopolitical and economic interests.
