Abstract

The operations of urban renewal consider complex, mostly post-industrial sites. There are many problems to solve concerning ecology, economy, and society. One of the ecological problems is the pollution of soils and water. In urban renewal, the heavily contaminated soils must be remedied to become entirely safe to welcome new dwellers and new functions, e.g., residential, commercial, or leisure. The research question was what kind of remediation to use? The study presents selected possibilities to treat the problem of polluted soils in the case of large-scale urban renewal operations. Phytoremediation may be the most economically viable and sustainable option, even if there are some risks. In the second part of the paper a literature research results which resulted in a list of 157 plants suitable for phytoremediation are presented.
