• The study presents findings on young people’s experiences during a pandemic. • Participatory social theatre is employed as a creative methodology. • Young co-researchers living in a host community express their connection to place. • Reclaiming place has provoked a desire for more socially and environmentally just tourism. • Co-researching is presented as an emancipatory method in tourism research.
