Abstract

This chapter focuses on an Indigenous Ways of Knowing Model of Identity Development. Auto-historia and refleccion is utilized to delineate a tribal theory using it as a reflexive foundation for cultural, spiritual and psychological empowerment or conscientizacion, consciousness-raising (Brown and Strega, Research as resistance: Critical, Indigenous & Anti-Oppressive approaches. Canadian Scholars’ Press, Toronto, 2005; Quinones-Rosado, Consciousness-in-action: Toward an integral psychology of Liberation & Transformation. ile Publications, Caguas, 2007). Mestiza Consciousness Tribal Theory (Anzaldua, Borderlands/La Frontera: The new mestiza. Aunt Lute Books, San Francisco, 1987) is outlined as a viable and valid way to understand identity development supporting consciousness raising and critical dialogue of Indigenous people who experience multiple intersecting identities and realities. The author describes los 7 ritos de conocimiento or 7 rites of passage of Mestiza Consciousness Tribal Theory interlacing her reflexive process narrating her identities and navigation through the educational system both as a doctoral student and faculty member from 2010–2018. Recommendations for educators are provided as suggestions for critical reflection and dialogue in counseling and educational programs toward creating a more inclusive classroom environment and support balance in harmony for culturally diverse mental health professionals in training.
