Abstract

As the global construction sector is one of the main producers of waste and uses almost half of the materials extracted, the principles of circular economy have gained momentum as a solution to tackle these problems. By reusing materials, waste is minimized and new material extraction and production avoided. Nevertheless, it is rarely the case that a material can be reused without further processing and reclamation processes (e.g. dismantling, cleaning, repairing etc.) are necessary to prepare the material for its next destination. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is commonly used to calculate the environmental impact of a material. However, as data on the reclamation processes is scarce in available literature, the reclamation processes are mostly neglected in LCAs.
