Abstract

We establish a new reciprocity theorem for self-gravitating elastic configurations with an arbitrary initial static stress field, in the space of the original field functions. Nonhomogeneous initial conditions are considered. The earthquake faulting process in a perfectly elastic earth model is analyzed. From the reciprocity theorem we derive the appropriate extension of the fundamental equation of elastodynamic dislocation theory.
