Abstract

Friction behavior of Al particle filled glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite reciprocating against a steel ball (AISI E-52100) is investigated experimentally using a Reciprocating Friction Tester, TR-282. The composites having 5, 10 and 15 weight % Al of resin are fabricated in compression moulding process. Reciprocating tests are conducted at normal load of 0.1, 0.5, 0.8 and 1.0kg and the frequency of 10, 30 and 60Hz. Friction is influenced by the reciprocating time, normal load, and frequency levels and on the material. In general, friction coefficient maintained a decreasing trend with the increase of normal loads as well as increase of the wt% of Al content. At 10Hz frequency level with the increase of Al wt% from 5 to 15, a significant decrease of friction coefficient from 0.3 to 0.06 is observed. The response of friction coefficient in respect of reciprocating frequency/sliding velocity/sliding distance is also estimated throughout the experimental time.
