Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show : A. That the immediate origin of the Grail Legend is a celtic tale on the theme of the Widow's Son's Vengeance ; — B. that this theme appears in different mythologies of Indo-European origin ; — C. that the Widow's Son's Story is an initiatory myth in which Vengeance is the result of the acquisition, by the Hero, of Supreme Knowledge. The obvious conclusion is that the thesis of Celtic origin and the thesis of esoteric origin, far from being conflicting, are complementary.
