Abstract

The Torres islands which are located at the far north of the New Hebrides island arc, between the Banks islands and the Santa Cruz, had so far never been investigated archaeologically. Results obtained during several surveys from 1996 to 1998 are presented. They show that the most ancient occupation to date is characterised, as in Tikopia, by plain ware with notched rims. Lapita pottery has not been found there. These preliminary observations are then discussed in the context of the initial settlement strategies of the area.
