Abstract

The status of receptor models for the carbonaceous fraction of the ambient aerosol is reviewed. The sources and characterization techniques for atmospheric carbonaceous compounds are outlined. Receptor models are classified in semiquantitative methods, chemical mass balances, and multivariate techniques. Requirements, limitations, and applications of receptor models as applied to carbonaceous aerosols are presented.
