Abstract

A RECEPTION, attended by 350 Fellows and guests, was held on 3 June 1969 to celebrate the bicentenary of the observation of the transit of Venus by Captain Janies Cook, R.N., F. R. S. Professor J. C. Beaglehole of New Zealand delivered a James Cook commemorative lecture, in the Wellcome Lecture Hall, describing Cook’s experiences at sea and underlining his skill as a navigator. This lecture was preceded by an introductory talk given by the Astronomer Royal, Sir Richard Woolley, F. R. S., on the scientific purpose of Cook’s first voyage in the Endeavour . Lord Blackett, P.R.S., presided.
