Abstract

Recent purchasers of timeshare intervals was the focus of this study. Data from a sample composed of 10,224 randomly selected timeshare owners in the US revealed that recent buyers of timeshare are affluent, well educated members of the baby boom generation. They are often repeat purchasers of timeshare and are purchasing intervals for its exchange opportunity and to save money on future vacations. Recent buyers are also growing in sophistication in terms of what they are buying, from whom, and how much they are paying. As the timeshare offering has improved and gained stature among affluent consumers, timeshare owners—and the resorts that service them—will influence the tourism industry well into the 21st century due to their size, discretionary income and growth potential.
