Abstract

A brief account of the role of various instrumental methods such as atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICPAES), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), isotope dilution mass spectrometry (ID-MS), and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA), in the analyses of rare earth elements (REE) in geological and other industrial samples is presented. The capability of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) in REE analysis is highlighted. Recent advances in REE analysis by the development of laser ablation ICPMS and high-resolution ICP-MS and possible trends are discussed.
