Abstract

This timely and competent study attempts to answer these important questions now in the public mind: What is the trend of alcohol consumption? What is the percentage of alcoholic addicts in our adult population? According to Dr. Jellinek, the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the population below 15 years of age is so negligible that for practical purposes it may be disregarded. On the basis of all the data and statistics now available, the consumption of alcohol rose steadily during World War II. The percentage increase in the number of alcoholic addicts is less in the female than in the male adult population. The rates of chronic alcoholism appear to be determined by unwritten social controls rather than by legal control factors. The trend of deaths from alcoholism is no index of inebriety.
