Abstract

Objective Women sexual response is highly variable and multifaceted, and it is influenced by a wide range of components such as physiologic and contextual factors. The complex interplay of all these factors is reflected also in the multiple etiologic factors and determinants of sexual problems in women. In recent years, scientific perspective on sexual response in women have undergo major changes. In particular different models of sexual response in women have been proposed. None of the models to date, however, have been shown to be universally applicable and each model has important drawbacks and limitations. In our research we would evaluate a sample of Italian women and their sexual response. Design We recruited about 200 women in fertile age (18-45 years old) that was evaluate in their sexual response using a new model: a daily diary about their sexual activity. Method Every women are in fertile age, eumenorrhoic, without any gynecological or psichiatric pathologies, and it is necessary that every women no take oral contraception for better physiological monthly evaluation of sexual response. Results We observed a different model of sexual response in Italian sample, in comparison to cyclic model of Basson. Conclusions With the development of new models and concepts of normal sexual response in women, it is increasingly necessary for new definitions and concepts of sexual dysfunction to be developed. Promising efforts have been made in this regard, although much work remains to be done. New models and theoretical concepts have been proposed recently to account for this variability in female sexual response.
