Abstract

This review recently introduced 10 examples of heterometallic one-dimensional (1D) chain complexes, in which paramagnetic species are linked by second diamagnetic metals with metal–metal bonds. The paramagnetic species are first-row transition metals with high-spin states, and the diamagnetic high-period metals are the metals Rh, Pd, and Pt. It is possible to introduce paramagnetic metals into heterometallic metal string complexes obtained with polydentate ligands, such as oligopyridylamine, or multinuclearize using Pt complex, which are further extended using the HOMO–LUMO interaction at dz2 orbitals with other complexes. In each case of paramagnetic 1D complex, strong antiferromagnetic interactions are seen through metal-to-metal bonds. These interactions are stronger than those found in organic molecules or molecules with halide bridges.
