Abstract

The available evidence relevant to the interpretation of an observed oblateness is given. Heavy reliance is placed on the basic reports of the SCLERA oblateness work. The solar oblateness seems to imply that the mass quadrupole moment of the sun makes a negligible contribution to the advance of Mercury's perihelion. It is suggested that the excess brightness may deserve a more important role in the description of the sun. 15 references. (BJG)
