Abstract

Central adiposity shows stronger association with cardiovascular disease risk and type 2 diabetes than overall adiposity. Thus, measurements of waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHR) and waist to height ratio (WHtR) have been viewed as alternatives to BMI. Although all of these simple anthropometric measurements are useful in predicting the risk of diabetes and coronary heart disease, they have different predicting power in different ethnic groups. Most studies have shown that the association between WHtR and cardiovascular risk factors is stronger than that of BMI, WC or WHR. The use of WHtR could be an important screening tool to identify diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk factors in Chinese people. Key words: Central adiposity; Anthropometry; Waist to height ratio; Diabetes mellitus; Cardiovascular diseases
