Abstract

Deposits observed in cores collected on the south levee of the active middle Zaire deep-sea fan are fine-grained turbidites containing abundant thin silt laminae, alternated with clay laminae. Each sequence represents successive spillover of the dilute upper part of a continuous channelised turbidity current. Pulsatory overflows create a low velocity (0.1 m·s −1 ) overspill current on the levee with duration from a few days to a few weeks. Variations of the hydraulic regime within the overflow generate laminae. Les dépôts sédimentaires de la levée sud de l'éventail moyen actif du Zaı̈re sont composés de séquences de turbidites fines où alternent de nombreuses lamines de silt et d'argile. Chaque séquence représente les débordements successifs de la partie sommitale diluée d'un courant de turbidité chenalisé, continu. La succession des débordements génère un courant de débordement pulsatif sur la levée. Sa vitesse est faible (0,1 m·s −1 ) et sa durée varie de quelques jours à quelques semaines. Les variations de régimes hydrauliques au sein du courant de débordement génèrent les lamines.
