Abstract

During the summer of 1968, observations were made of the auroral spectrum at 27 Å spectral resolution between 1.02 μ and 1.13 μ. Absolute brightnesses were estimated from the spectra for the N2+ Meinel (0–0) band, N2 1PG (0–0) band and 2D0–2P0 (N I) line after subtraction of the background night airglow spectrum and after correcting for atmospheric extinction. Simultaneous measurements of the N2+ 1NG (0–0) band and O I line at 5577 Å have facilitated the reduction of the infrared brightnesses to the equivalent international brightness coefficient III brightnesses.
