Abstract
The regulatory changes brought about or proposed in 1989 should increase and extend competition in the United Kingdom telecommunications market to all areas except the provision of international and other links over 200 metres which will remain under the current duopoly until at least the end of 1990. The new BSGL should greatly simplify regulations affecting private networks and marks a watershed in the development of a fully competitive telecommunications environment in the United Kingdom. As a result of the further deregulation carried out in 1989 the United Kingdom will soon have one of the most liberal telecommunications regimes in the world. Already it is one of the few European countries to have a deregulated telecommunications market and United Kingdom developments have been used as a model for the Commission of the European Communities in developing its telecommunications policy.
