Abstract

This paper reviews aspects related to hydrogen as an energy carrier, starting with discussing reasons for its use. Recent strategies developed for hydrogen production include steam methane reforming, gasification, photocatalysis, plasmolysis, and electrocatalysis. Important information regarding their respective advances and challenges are briefly presented. This review focuses on electrocatalysis, the types of cells used, and beneficial electrocatalytic properties. Moreover, recent advances in the various types of electrocatalysts, such as perovskites, polymers, metal oxides, phosphides, nitrides, sulfides, noble metals, carbon-based materials, and MOFs, are reported. This paper aims to provide simplified knowledge to junior scientists, high-school beginners, and low-expertise people in the hydrogen energy field to enrich their knowledge regarding this field. According to our faith, each person was once a beginner. This paper aims to serve as a reference for future researchers in the field.
