Abstract

A model trachea and isolated cadaver tracheae were used to study floppy and standard cuff tracheostomy tubes. With floppy cuffs a relatively high intracuff pressure, compared with capillary blood pressure, was needed to give a complete seal. The mobility of this cuff and its inability to centralize the tube in the trachea could be cause for concern.
