Abstract

In this article we review some of the recent developments in the use of environmental impact statements (EISs) in South Korea. Urbanization and industrialization have created environmental problems, which in turn have led to a growing public awareness for improved environmental planning and management in Korea. Recent changes in Korea's environmental laws and impact assessment procedures are described. Next three recent Korean EISs are examined. The first involves an expansion of petrochemical plant facility in Ulsan, one of Korea's major industrial cities. The second involves the development of a new town called Koyang-Ilsan, located in a rural area north of the country's largest city, Seoul. The third EIS was prepared for golf course development in a rural area of northern Choong Chung Province. The weaknesses and strengths of the Korean EIS system are identified and some suggestions for improving the content and procedures for Korea are offered.
