Abstract

This article discusses recent developments in Dutch law with respect to the legitimacy of medical behavior that shortens life, in particular as reflected in a number of reports of authoritative medical bodies and in a recent decision of the Dutch Supreme Court. The direction of legal development seems to be toward ever more effective and comprehensive control, while both the autonomy of the patient and doubts concerning the benificence of medical treatment are increasingly important in the legitimation of such behavior.
