Recent Developments in the European Union’s Involvement in Mediterranean Fisheries Management

Abstract

Abstract This article examines the attention that the European Union (EU) currently pays to fisheries management in the Mediterranean Sea. The Union’s action in this marine area is complex. On the one hand, the EU is present through its Common Fisheries Policy, as the coast of eight Member States border the Mediterranean Sea. On the other hand, the EU cooperates with the other Mediterranean countries through its European Neighbourhood Policy as well as with two regional fisheries management organisations with a mandate over Mediterranean living marine resources, namely, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, and the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas.
