Abstract

Rare-earth iron garnets were used as absorbers in Mossbauer studies of the magnetic properties of the rareearth ions. The sublattice of the rare-earth ions in the garnet displays a spontaneous magnetization below the Curie temperature (550 deg C) that is correlated with the existence of an effective magnetic field at the rare-earth nuclei. Results are given for Dy/sup 161/ in dysprosium iron garnet, for the 2/sup +/ level of Dy/sup 161/, for Eu/sup 3+/ in europium iron garnet, and for Tm/sup 169/ in thulium iron garnet. 22 references.
