Abstract

Three major areas of new knowledge on paediatric neuromuscular blockade have seen daylight during the last few years. First, new nondepolarizing muscle relaxants and controversy on suxamethonium have been the subjects of numerous studies and articles. Secondly, a clear picture of influence of age on the potency and maintenance requirement of different muscle relaxants has become available. Thirdly, new insight into infants' possible sensitivity to muscle relaxants has been put forward. Before reviewing these subjects, we present some data on the influence of anaesthesia and monitoring methods on the pharmacodynamic results of muscle relaxants in the paediatric population.
