Abstract

The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) has established a program that supports development of high temperature superconductors to generate the highest magnetic fields possible. A near term goal is design and construction of insert coils to obtain a combined field of 25 T. Recently, we have successfully tested a coil, wound from Bi2212 PIT conductor, that generated 1.2 T in a background field of 17 T. We are developing duplex coils (wind-and-react within react-and-wind) to further increase the field. A new high performance insulation scheme and several wire and coil test facilities have been established and are described. Another activity focuses on mercury systems. Newly synthesized samples of Hg1Ba2Ca2Cu3O8 (Hgl223) show excellent microstructural characteristics with large regions of mm size of aligned grains.
