Abstract

Although Egypt is one of the earliest international tourist-destinations, a new period of rapid developmemt was ushered in only recently. This is due to an increased awareness by Egyptians of the recreational potential of their own country, favourably influenced by government sponsored sight-seeing programme. Middle-class Egyptians now visit the famous sites of Upper Egypt as only foreigners used to do before. Coastal recreation has received a big push too. A lot of private money is invested in new small hotels and in residences, mostly from savings through ex-patriate work in the oil-countries.
