Abstract

ABSTRACT The slender madtom (Noturus exilis) experienced a drastic decline in distribution and abundance in Wisconsin between the late 1970s and early 1990s. The species disappeared from 67% of the sites and 81% of the streams from which it was previously known, and currently it persists at only 11 sites on four streams in the Rock River basin of southern Wisconsin. In some streams, loss of the slender madtom can be attributed to fish kills from agricultural runoff or channel dewatering from hydroelectric dam operation, but in other streams the cause of the disappearance remains unclear.
