Abstract

Stringent regulations are being imposed on automotive industry for the higher gas mileage per gallon and lesser carbon emission. The industrial demand for complex components made of copper is increasing as they are necessary for electric drives and also for modern battery technology used in the automotive industry. Laser welding of copper used to be quite complicated due to its high reflection and high heat conductivity. However using multi kW disk laser and the right process techniques it is possible to get a stable process and good quality. Latest laser developments made it possible to make a 1kW green laser. This wavelength increases the absorption in copper and thus makes copper welding easier. Especially in heat conduction welding or thin material this shorter wavelength leads to a tremendous improvement. This paper shows both using a high power disk laser in copper welding of thick material as well as fine welding of thin copper sheets with a green disk laser
