Abstract

From several points of view, the advances made in the therapy of human parasitic diseases in recent years have been considerable. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate and to briefly review the state of the ART. For each of the most important human worm infections I shall try to give a reasonable answer to the following four questions: (1) What is the best estimate of the world-wide prevalence of the disease? (2) How much damage is the disease doing to the patient, to society, to the economy? (3) What are the best hygienic measures against the disease and what can one hope to achieve by applying them? (4) How effective are the best-known anthelmintics in the treatment of this disease. The last point will be discussed with particular emphasis on eradication programs and mass treatment.
