Abstract

As an idiopathic and self-limited avascular necrosis of femoral epiphysis in children, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease (LCPD) usually appears in the first decade of life. After extensive researches on the etiology of LCPD, numerous theories have been proposed, including vascular occlusion, thrombophilia, trauma, inflammatory process, pathway abnormality of insulin-like growth factor-1, maternal smoking and some other biological and environmental factors. However, most of these theories have been unsubstantiated or even controversial.This review introduced recent research advances of the etiology of LCPD.
