Abstract

Idea: The Jaslok Hospital and DeSa'S Hospital Implant programme has implanted 115 patients over the past 15 years. As new technology has evolved over this period, this study evaluates the benefits and results of the older and newer devices and of the different surgical techniques. Method: In this study, 52 Hortmann Implex, 11 Nucleus, 31 Medel and 21 Clarion devices were used. In 55 cases, the electrode cable was introduced into the cochleostomy via the attic, in 8 cases, through a tunnel in the posterior bony canal wall and in 52 cases through a posterior tympanotomy. Results: The results after rehabilitation in the categorized perilingual, young and old prelingual, and postlingual groups at the end of the 1st and 4th week, and at 6 months, were evaluated and a comparative study was made in each group. The 52 cases with Hortmann Implex devices were excluded, because of later device failures. Conclusion: The results in postlinguals were superior with multi electrode implants and there was no significant difference between SPEAK, ACE, CIS and SAS strategy users. Results in young and old prelinguals were superior to multi electrode implants, and best with SAS and PPS strategies. Mondini patients performed best with enhanced bipolar electrodes and those cases with ossified cochleas did better with compressed than split electrodes.
