Abstract

New progress in perpendicular recording has been made to surpass physical limitations, for meeting demands of future high-density information storage. A new SPT writing head with high efficiency as well as high robustness against stray fields was developed. The challenges of high recording resolution, low medium noise, and high thermal stability have been addressed. To overcome thermal instability for future Tera bits class density, new candidate media of Co/Pd superlattices and FePt films have been proposed. Finally, achievable recording performance by using advanced Co-Cr-M media is described.
