Abstract

Coastal Family Health Center is a not-for-profit health center that operates several community health clinics in the Biloxi, Mississippi, area with an annual operating budget of $10.4 million. On 29 August 2005, Hurricane Katrina virtually destroyed the Coastal Family Health network. Frustrated by slow governmental response, Coastal joined forces with volunteer organizations to salvage and rebuild its facilities. With the help of a host of unpaid volunteers, the subjects of this interview cobbled together a patchwork of funding sources to allow Coastal to begin to restore primary care services for thousands of Mississippi residents. PBS's NewsHour with Jim Lehrer has reported extensively on their efforts to recover from the storm.
