Abstract

This chapter shows that the Euro crisis and the refugee crisis have had a clear negative impact on citizen trust in EU institutions. However, much of this decline is temporary. We see a clear rebound in trust between the two crises as well as after the refugee crisis. It is still early, but it appears the effect of crisis on public support and trust in EU institutions is short term. However, this chapter also documents a steady reduction in the percentage of citizens who do not know whether to trust EU institutions. Crises may have a consolidating effect on public opinion. Should further research corroborate this, future crises will likely cause smaller swings in public opinion because a larger proportion of citizens have already made up their mind beforehand.
