Abstract

Crowded stacks and compromised shelving arrangements are a problem for many libraries. The traditional solution, a new building, is now unlikely in many institutions. A radical rearrangement of the library may be the only feasible solution. This paper explains the logistics of rearranging occupied space, based on a method used by Purdue University's General Library. It describes how to draw a model of the present arrangement, plan the future arrangement, and make the transition between the two.
