Abstract

Eriophyes insidiosus Keifer and Wilson is a fastidious bud mite which reproduces only inside buds of its host. These buds provide microenvironmental and physical conditions that are difficult to reproduce artificially. In this study, rearing of E. insidiosus was attempted on peach (Prunus persica Batsch, Rosaceae) cuttings generated by tissue culture, by rooting infested peach cuttings, and on peach trees that were infested naturally or manually. Manual infestation of buds, soon after dormancy ended, was the most successful technique, providing large numbers of mites. Availability of this methodology will contribute to the progress of studies on the relationships between bud-mite vectors and the viruses they transmit.
