Abstract

The production of real W and Z bosons has been studied in epcollisions at HERA. A combined analysis is performed with the data taken with the H1 and ZEUS de- tectors corresponding to 0.98fb −1 of integrated luminosity to search for events containing an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum, which is dominated by single W production. The total single W boson production cross section is measured as 1.06 ± 0.16(stat.) ± 0.07(sys.)pb, in agreement with the Standard Model (SM) expec- tation of 1.26 ± 0.19pb. The production of Z bosons has been studied in the reaction ep → eZp (∗) , where p (∗) stands for a proton or a low-mass nucleon resonance, using a data sample collected with the ZEUS detector amounting to 0.5fb −1 . The Z is measured in the hadronic decay mode. The cross section of the reaction ep → eZp (∗) is measured to be 0.13 ± 0.06(stat.) ± 0.01(syst.)pb, in agreement with the SM prediction of 0.16pb.

Highlights

  • IntroductionAre background processes for some physics beyond the Standard Model (SM)

  • H1 and ZEUS reported that measured cross sections agree well with the Standard Model (SM) predictions in whole Q2 range. These results proved the calculations of the virtual exchanges of W and Z bosons in ep collisions in a wide Q2 range

  • The total systematic uncertainties determined in the combined analysis are found to be the same as those derived by the individual experiments
