Abstract

Traffic congestion is one of the serious problems in recent times. Proper re-routing of vehicles needs to be done for better management of congestion. Emerging technologies like fog computing, Internet of Things (IoT) in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can make this re-routing process more productive to deal with the traffic congestion. An ITS enabled system is designed here based on fog computing and IoT. The system uses real time data of the vehicles and its main aim is to re-route vehicles by executing a Next hop selection algorithm. It also considers the vehicles which are affected by some unexpected events and re-routes them to avoid congestion. The system calculates the sequence and duration of green signal for the lanes dynamically as well. The performance of the system is studied qualitatively and quantitatively. The proposed system outperforms while comparing it with the existing dijkstra and A* algorithm.
