Abstract

Access to real-time and historical power quality and reliability data can significantly enhance a utility's ability to maintain reliable energy delivery, validate premium rates, and retain customers. These data are equally important for their C&I customers to ensure that their equipment and processes do not suffer from downtime caused by such power disturbances. Exceptionally low cost monitors, flexible connectivity, a centralized database and an Internet-based user interface are key to realizing wide-scale deployment. Of most importance are voltage profiles of events and disturbances on the transmission and distribution grid. Data viewing, email notification, administration, and statistical summary reporting of the data are important for various utility departments and their customers, and should be generally accessible via the Internet. Having access to real-time and historical data on the T&D network can enhance customer satisfaction and utility response to outages and events, reduce operational costs, and provide new revenue opportunities. One possible approach to meeting today's overall monitoring needs is presented in this paper.
