Abstract
The Union Canal Tunnel, the second tunnel to be constructed in the United States, was slowly carved out of the mountainside from its north and south ends with the aid of only shovels, picks, a star drill, and gunpowder. Boats were poled through its length of 729 ft (222.2 m) while the mules followed the towpath over the hill.
