Abstract

The new definitions of seven SI base units, which are now based on their respective defining constants, were approved and adopted by the 26th CGPM. Candela, being one of the seven SI base units, was also redefined in terms of a defining constant, Kcd (maximum luminous efficacy of photopic vision). It is the only SI base unit which is derived from a physiological phenomenon of human vision. Candela has seen a long route of evolution from being defined on the basis of combustion candles to being now defined on the basis of a defining constant linked to a physiological phenomenon. This chapter traces the path of evolution of candela and future prospects of its definition.KeywordsCandelaPhotometryMetrologyQuantum photometry
