The ‘paperless office’ as originally envisaged is a misleading phrase. Office automation tools should enable users to manage paper more efficiently, not dispense with it altogether. Often the image suggested by OA suppliers does not correspond with reality. One result of the pilot projects instigated in the UK is that suppliers have been forced to come to terms with reality. One of the most successful pilot projects is at Cambridgeshire County Council.
