Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine the specific features of realistic trends in the iconography of the Ukrainian Baroque epoch.Research methodology. The author used complex methods of contemporary art history; iconological and iconographic research methods that contributed to the theoretical understanding of the specific features of the realistic trends of Ukrainian baroque iconography. A comparative historical method has been used (to determine the special features of the treatment of the iconographic canon by leading artists of the 17th — 18th centuries); a method of description and analysis (for identifying the features of the interpretation of images of saints according to innovative aesthetic trends of the Ukrainian Baroque style), as well as typological and iconographic methods (for structuring the basic models of realistic embodiment of iconographic images).Results. Innovative principles that have arisen as a result of a complex interaction between the decorative-conventional form of artistic expression and the new, realistic worldview, formed under the influence of the national aesthetic understanding of moral, cultural and spiritual values in the 17th — the first half of the 18th century, most clearly manifested in the baroque iconography, and became the basis for the development of realistic principles of national art. The images of baroque icons that are captivating with their realism are the evidence of the emergence of new methods of Ukrainian painting (light and shadow modeling of the faces of saints, the use of elements of naturalism in the image of images and background, direct perspective, etc.).Novelty. The development trends of the Ukrainian baroque icon painting are investigated. The characteristic aspects of the interpretation of the iconographic canon and the methods of enrichment of expressive means according to aesthetic principles of the 17th — 18th centuries are considered. The features of synthesizing traditional iconography, elements of folk art, realistic interpretation and naturalism features in the icon-painting works of representatives of Ukrainian baroque are revealed. The author determines the characteristic aspects of realistic trends in the iconography of the Ukrainian Baroque era in retrospect.The practical significance. The material in this article can be of interest to the Ukrainian theorists and practices of art in the context of involving it to educational and scientific appeal.
